Where to Stay in Reims: The Best Areas

Two areas, two ways to experience Reims: heritage within walking distance around the Cathedral, Champagne village life around the Forum. Our addresses, our unmissable spots and our apartments.

In Reims, Champagne and heritage are not two boxes to tick: they are two threads you can keep pulling without ever reaching the end. Heritage in Reims is of course Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral and the coronations of the kings of France, but also unique Roman remains, remarkable Art Deco façades, historic market halls with daring architecture, and so much more. Champagne is that of the great houses and their cellars dug into the chalk, of the growers, the tasting cellars and the wine bars, the kind you visit as much as the kind you sip at the counter. Choosing where to stay in Reims means choosing which end of these threads to pull.

You will find both of them all over the city centre, and you could perfectly well drop your bags on Place d’Erlon or near the station, towards Saint-Remi or Barbâtre: it would not be a mistake, and each of these areas has its strengths. But we have our preferences.

They go to two areas: the Cathedral area, and the Forum and Halles du Boulingrin area. Staying here means no longer having to go looking for Reims: you wake up in the heart of its heritage, with Champagne on every street corner. It is living the ultimate Reims experience, from the first coffee of the morning to the last glass of the evening. Richer, more surprising and more captivating than the others, these are the two we recommend. Here is why, one area after the other.

Our two top picks

Area 1 of 2

The Cathedral Area

Some addresses put you near a monument, and some areas settle you inside history. The Cathedral area is one of them. Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral is not a stop here: it lives right next door. The one where thirty-three kings were crowned, and which you glimpse at the end of a street on your way to buy bread.

Why stay here

  1. Heritage, on foot. The Cathedral, and right beside it the Palais du Tau, announced as the Musée des Sacres (the Coronation Museum) from this winter. The Carnegie Library, an Art Deco masterpiece, is open to visitors. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, closed since 2019, is expected back in 2027. No car needed, not even a map. Our Art Deco trail passes right through here.
  2. Great tables and drinks a few steps away. A brunch at En Aparthé, a pizza at L’Antica, both on rue Chanzy, lunch at La Grande Georgette, whose terrace faces the Cathedral, a glass of bubbly at Le Parvis or Le Coq Rouge: many of our best-loved addresses are here, a few minutes’ walk away. We cover them in our articles on brunch, brasseries and Champagne bars.
  3. The city centre within easy reach. Place d’Erlon and rue de Vesle are next door: mostly big-name stores, with the BHV as the department store, but you will find everything, and terraces to linger on. For the rest of the city, the tram (lines T1 and T2) stops at Opéra-Cathédrale. In December, the Reims Christmas market is only two stops away. The Voie des Sacres leads on foot, in about fifteen minutes, to the Basilica of Saint-Remi, where lies the bishop who gave Clovis his baptism.
  4. In the evening, no need to go far. A show at the Opéra de Reims, a glass at Le Coq Rouge, open until 1:30 a.m. at weekends, a themed night at L’Axo: everything is a few minutes’ walk away. And if you happen to be here at the right time, there is Regalia: a free sound-and-light show, no booking needed, projected onto the Cathedral’s façade. It usually runs from late May to early October, then a few evenings in December.

Our place to stay

La Noctambulle Cathédrale

Comfort Duplex45 m² / 485 sq ftUp to 5 guests

On a charming little cobbled street, just behind the Voie des Sacres, La Noctambulle Cathédrale is a warm and comfortable duplex of 45 m², a real little cocoon in an old building. Light pouring through the windows, a mezzanine open to the living room, a big Vertigo chandelier that sets the tone from the entrance. The Cathedral is a 2-minute walk away, Place d’Erlon under ten, and yet the street stays quiet: no terrace noise under the windows. It sleeps up to five, as a family or with close friends, and you feel like a local rather than a passing visitor.

Just steps from the Cathedral, Place Royale links our two areas. It is one of the most beautiful squares in Reims, and it commands attention.

Begun in 1757 as a tribute to Louis XV, it unfolds its arcades and balustraded rooflines, all horizontals, very 18th century. The pediment of the former Hôtel des Fermes, now the sub-prefecture, recalls the city’s commercial past. At the centre, a monument to Louis XV, signed Pigalle, watches everyone go by. Rue Cérès, which hugs the square, holds two of our addresses: Sacré Brunch for brunch, the Bistro de la Poste for a bistro lunch. And it is by this street that you head for the Forum, our second area.

Area 2 of 2

The Forum / Boulingrin Area

Nearly two thousand years ago, the Romans held their forum here, where business was done and people met. The togas are gone, the terraces have taken over, but the square has not changed its trade. It is the most local corner of Reims, and the one where you least feel like planning anything.

Why stay here

  1. A real village life, with a trendy twist. You have breakfast at an award-winning bakery, lunch on a “sacré” burger, dinner in an Art Deco brasserie. You wander like a local: at the florist with her delightful shop front spilling out onto the street; at the iconic cheese shop, where you go in for a piece and leave with a platter; at the wine merchant, finder of incredible growers, who slips into your hands the bottle you would never have found alone; at the Gault & Millau-awarded bakery, where the Saturday-morning crowd is made up of regulars. On Fridays and Saturdays, the Halles du Boulingrin, a spectacular historic landmark, host the market. You take the time to discover small original shops and passionate antique dealers, and between two purchases, you sit on a terrace on the square and forget what you had planned to do.
  2. Treats on every street corner. A chocolate by a three-Michelin-star chef at Alain Ducasse’s counter on Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, made from bean to bar; the old-fashioned pralines of the Caffet house; the pâtisserie Aux Merveilleux de Fred, whose meringues coated in whipped cream and chocolate shavings melt in the mouth like a cloud; and Choc’n Roll, a rock-and-roll shop where master chocolatier Jules Duterlay creates pralines, macarons and homemade spreads before your eyes.
  3. Heritage you come across without looking for it. The Halles du Boulingrin, a unique Art Deco landmark in France, and Le Cellier, a former Champagne cellar from 1898, are part of our Art Deco trail. On rue de Tambour, a façade carries five sculpted musicians. And beneath the square lies the Roman cryptoporticus, a remnant of the ancient forum: you can see it from the square, but it almost never opens to visitors. Dozens of typical little streets will surprise you with their architects’ façades and their many details steeped in history.
  4. Champagne on every street corner. The great houses are at home here: Thiénot and its must-visit rooftop, Veuve Clicquot and its exclusive private mansion. Champagne will be offered to you in any bar in the area, each with its own original list, shaped by its owner. From the Wine Bar by Le Vintage, whose sparkling-wine list was voted the best in France in 2026, to Le Clos, which puts a different house in the spotlight every week, by way of Trésors de Champagne, the meeting place of independent growers, and of course the wine merchants of the square, who put into your hands a grower you cannot find anywhere else.
  5. Authentic Champagne evenings. An award-winning wine bar, an open-air bar hidden in a courtyard, bars open until 2 a.m. at weekends (Le Clos, Le Pavé, The Shop Bar): everything is within a few streets. In summer, free concerts on the steps of the cryptoporticus, generally on Thursdays and Fridays.
  6. The Cathedral on foot, the Christmas market too. The Cathedral is 300 m from Place du Forum, and in December the Reims Christmas market, on the Hautes Promenades, is truly close: less than ten minutes on foot.

Our places to stay

To experience this area from the inside, our three apartments await you on rue du Marc, in a neoclassical mansion dating from 1859. Cobbled, pedestrian and peaceful, this street is among the oldest in Reims. It sits beside two small green spaces: a quiet, discreet square, nestled in the remains of a house with its Wallace fountain, and a garden with Romanesque arcades, where a piano is left freely available. On the Champagne side, you go down into the cellars of the Thiénot house, opposite our apartments, before coming back up to toast on its rooftop, with the Cathedral as a backdrop. Place du Forum, its terraces and its cryptoporticus are 40 m away, and at a leisurely pace you reach the Halles du Boulingrin as well as the Cathedral.
