Champagne Growers Near Reims: 8 Independent Producers to Visit Off the Beaten Track

Skip the famous houses — these grower-producers open their cellars and their doors. Grand Cru, organic, blanc de blancs: authentic Champagne straight from the source.

You may have already explored the cellars of Pommery or toured Taittinger by torchlight. These visits are impressive, and they tell a particular story of Champagne — one of grand maisons, monumental chalk caves, and labels known the world over.

But there is another Champagne. One of growers who tend their vines by hand, know every row by name, and open their cellars the way you'd open your home to a guest. These producers carry a special designation: grower-producers, identified by the letters RM (Récoltant-Manipulant) on the label. Around Reims — just 45 minutes from Paris by TGV, in the heart of the Champagne wine region — there are hundreds of them producing wines of rare authenticity, often award-winning, sometimes exported to Japan or the United States, yet available to buy directly on-site.

What is a grower-producer (RM) in Champagne?

In the world of Champagne, the letters RM on a bottle mean the producer did everything themselves: growing the vines, harvesting, pressing, fermenting, blending, and bottling. No bought-in grapes, no outsourcing. Every drop comes exclusively from their own plots.

This is the opposite of a négociant-manipulant (NM) — the status of the major houses — which purchases grapes from hundreds of growers to produce large volumes with a consistent house style year after year. Both approaches have their logic. But RM champagnes offer something unique: the expression of a precise terroir, often a single village, sometimes a single parcel.


1. Champagne Lamiable — Tours-sur-Marne

About 30 kilometres from Reims, the village of Tours-sur-Marne holds Grand Cru status — one of only 17 villages in the entire Champagne appellation to carry this classification. The Lamiable family has been rooted here since the 15th century, and has been producing champagne since the 1950s. Today, Ophélie leads the winemaking with a deliberately hands-off approach: intervene as little as possible and let the terroir speak.

The 6-hectare vineyard is planted primarily with pinot noir (60%) and chardonnay. Some sources also reference a small parcel of Petit Meslier, a near-extinct grape variety found at very few estates — worth asking about when you visit. The estate holds HVE and Sustainable Viticulture certifications, and offers a range of immersive experiences: cellar tours, live disgorgement demonstrations, and a champagne-themed escape room.

2. Champagne Assailly-Leclaire — Avize (Côte des Blancs)

Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Century-old estate

Avize is one of the most prestigious villages on the Côte des Blancs, a ridge of hills south of Épernay devoted entirely to chardonnay. No pinot noir, no meunier: the Assailly-Leclaire estate, founded in 1899, works around ten hectares of vines planted predominantly in chardonnay, on south-facing chalky soils.

The result is blanc de blancs of exceptional finesse — mineral, fresh, with the characteristic tension that defines the Côte des Blancs style. Since late 2022, Vincent Assailly runs the estate alone. A significant share of production is exported to Belgium, Japan, and South Korea, but direct sales remain available by appointment.

3. Champagne Alfred Tritant — Bouzy

Grand Cru Organic AB Bouzy Rouge Hachette 2026 ★

Bouzy is famous for two things: its Grand Cru champagne, and its Bouzy Rouge — a still red wine under the Coteaux Champenois appellation, made from pinot noir, that rivals many a Burgundy. The Alfred Tritant estate, a grower-producer since 1930, makes both.

The estate has been certified Organic (AB) since 2023, which remains relatively rare among RM producers in the region. Jean-Luc Weber-Tritant welcomes visitors with four tour formats — Discovery, Immersion, Gourmet, and Lantern Tour. The 2018 Vintage and Plein Cadre cuvées both received one star in the 2026 Hachette Wine Guide.

4. Champagne Marc Chauvet — Rilly-la-Montagne

Premier Cru HVE VDC Old Vintages

Rilly-la-Montagne is one of the oldest wine-growing villages on the Montagne de Reims, classified Premier Cru, nestled against the forest. Clotilde and Nicolas Chauvet tend their vines with a strong environmental commitment: HVE and VDC (Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne) certifications, and reduced-input farming since 2005.

The cellar is what truly impresses: hand-carved from chalk, it houses thousands of bottles ageing slowly in the dark, allowing the estate to offer rare older vintages that the large houses simply cannot. The Chauvet champagnes have received distinctions from Masters of Wine.

5. Champagne Denis Lallement — Ludes

What sets Denis Lallement apart is the diversity of his terroirs. His vines span four distinct communes: Verzy and Verzenay, both classified 100% Grand Cru on the northern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, and Ludes and Trois-Puits, both Premier Cru. This palette allows for complex assemblages where the power of Verzenay's black grapes plays against the freshness of Ludes.

6. Champagne Vincent Carré — Trépail / Verzy

Here is an estate with an unusual profile for the Montagne de Reims: Anne-Sophie and Vincent Carré cultivate a vineyard planted 80% in chardonnay — in a sub-region traditionally dominated by black grape varieties. Their plots lie across Trépail (Premier Cru) and Verzy (Grand Cru), on the cooler, east-facing south-eastern slopes of the mountain.

7. Champagne Veuve Maurice Lepitre — Rilly-la-Montagne

Premier Cru Single Terroir Women Winemakers Chalk Cellars 1905

Founded in 1905, this estate is today run by Adeline — the fourth generation of an unbroken line of women winemakers, a rare and compelling story. The entire 7-hectare vineyard is Premier Cru, all on the single terroir of Rilly-la-Montagne, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Champagne hillsides.

Several cuvées feature a noticeably higher proportion of chardonnay than is typical for the Montagne de Reims. The range spans both Brut and Extra-Brut styles, all from this single terroir. The chalk cellars, dug by Maurice Lepitre himself in 1905, ensure a minimum of three years' ageing for every cuvée.

8. Champagne Pierre Trichet — Trois-Puits

Premier Cru 5 km from Reims Hachette Guide

Just five kilometres from Reims Cathedral, Trois-Puits is one of the closest wine villages to the city. Founded in 1947 by Antoinette Trichet and taken over by her grandson Pierre in the 1980s, the estate offers a wide range of Premier Cru cuvées — including a blanc de blancs and a blanc de noirs regularly recognised by the Hachette Wine Guide.

A useful note for informed visitors: for some years now, the estate has held négociant-manipulant (NM) status alongside its own vineyard plots, linked to a separate trading label. The champagnes from the family vineyard continue to be produced with the same artisanal care — worth asking about when you visit.

How to Plan Your Visit

Most of these estates do not accept walk-ins. A phone call or email a few days ahead is all it takes — the growers are generally very welcoming, but they work alone or with family and cannot always receive visitors at short notice. Most are also happy to welcome English-speaking visitors.

One day: Trichet at Trois-Puits (5km) in the morning + Lallement or Chauvet at Ludes/Rilly at midday + Lamiable or Tritant at Tours-sur-Marne/Bouzy in the afternoon.

Two days: Add Assailly-Leclaire at Avize and Vincent Carré at Trépail for a full loop covering the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. No estate is more than 30–45 minutes from Reims by car.

Getting around: A rental car is the most practical option — public transport between villages is limited. Reims makes an ideal base for the whole trip.

Best time to visit: March through November. Avoid the harvest season — typically late August to mid-September — when growers are entirely focused on the vines and the press house.


FAQ — Champagne Growers & Independent Producers

What does RM mean on a champagne label?
RM stands for Récoltant-Manipulant — a grower-producer who makes champagne exclusively from their own grapes. It's the opposite of NM (Négociant-Manipulant), the status of most major brands, which can purchase grapes from other growers. You'll find the initials in small print on the label, below the registration number.
Can you buy champagne directly from a grower-producer?
Yes — and that's one of the great advantages. Most RM estates sell direct, often at prices below what you'd pay at a Paris wine shop or specialist retailer for equivalent quality. Some also ship within France and to certain export markets.
Do you need to be a wine expert to visit a champagne grower?
Not at all. Grower-producers are used to welcoming curious visitors with no prior knowledge. A visit to an RM estate is often more educational than a tour of a grand maison — precisely because you're talking directly with the person who made the wine.
